Born in Palestine of British/American parents, I graduated from the Royal School of Needlework in 1955 with a 3-year, Mark Excellent Diploma. I was the youngest student at that time to have been awarded the First Place Award from the Worshipful Company of Needlemakers and the First Prize Silver Medal from the city and Guilds of London. After a year at a Cambridge Institute College, I taught Dressmaking in English High Schools for three years. Upon arriving in Clemson, South Carolina in 1963, I opened the Robin Hood Wool Shop which I ran for 13 years and taught Adult Education at Clemson University for 11 years. The Shop was a Charter Member of what is now the International Needleart Retailers Guld. I have authored Correspondence Courses, the first of which was offered by the Embroiderers' Guild of America in 1970. Courses in Blackwork and Pulled Stitches are currently being offered by the American Needlepoint Guild and in Hardanger and Finishing with Flair by the Embroiderers' Guild. I have taught workshops, given lectures and judged in 40 states (hoping to eventually do them all!), Canada, Mexico and Australia, including National and Regional Seminars. For 11 years I taught the Counted Thread Shopowner's Certification Program for the American Professional Retailer's Guild. I have been on the Faculty of Callaway Gardens Needlecraft School, the Valentine Assembly (now the National Academy of Needlearts), the Council of American Embroiderers, the Smocking Arts Guild of America and the National Embroidery Teacher's Association. I co-ordinated the Pinehurst Institute of Advanced NeedleArt and teach at Trade Shows for Wichelt Imports, Inc. I have contributed articles on embroidery techniques to the periodic magazines of major organisations and written a series of articles for The Creative Needle. I have been featured on Public Embroidery. I lead Embroidery tours abroad. A treasured honour was the Lifetime Achievement Award, given in 1999 by the National Academy of Needlearts. Leisure activities have included sports car rallying, gymkhanas, square dancing, international folk dancing, singing, reading, listening to audio books (great while stitching!), concert and threatre-going.
