| USING A LAYING TOOL | ||||
|
A laying tool is used to lay fibers flat on the fabric. Laying tools are made of bone, metal, plastic, and wood. There are two basic types of tips. A straight tool and a tappered tool. The tappered laying tools can also be used as an awl. Bone laying tools are very nice, but the tips easily break when dropped. Wood laying tools are often very light in the hand, good for people with arthritis. Metal laying tools can be simple or decorative, very sturdy and have weight to them. Although no laying tool is heavy, the metal ones feel like you have something in your hand. They are also very hard to damage when dropped. There are also laying tools that can be mounted on your finger. I advise against them, if you forget it is on your finger, you can poke yourself in the eye. Which ever kind you choose, it is a personal preference. Hold the fibers flat against the fabric("A") and pull your needle to the other side("B"). Hold the thread with the laying tool until the fibers are all the way through the fabric. Some times it is necessary to rub the laying tool up and down the fibers to separate them. "A" "C" The top row was created without a laying tool("C"). You can see the fibers are twisted. The bottom row was done with a laying tool. This row is much flatter and more consistent. It might take 1-2 projects to get used to the tool, but once you have the hang of it, you'll be hooked. |
