This Cross Stitch is done by filling in the background and leaving the image blank. This technique came from the 13th and 14th Century, Assisi, Italy. Birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi and his sister Clare. The earlist examples were worked by nuns in the convents for the church altars. Many designs consisted of animals and foliage. Originally the work was accomplished by the long-armed cross stitch or a drawn thread background of whipped stitch. Today it is mostly worked in the holbein and cross stitch. Traditional colors were gold, blue, brown, yellow, green and red. Today colors of any choice are used.
