  HARDANGER

Hardanger embroidery is an open needlework that is said to have come from ancient Asia and Persia. It was worked on gauze netting in colored silks and worn by the nobility. It reached Norway and other Scandinavian countries just prior to the 1800's where it evolved into a traditional folk embroidery. Initially the Scandianavians used a very fine white cloth with 50 threads to the inch and white thread. Hardanger uses strickly geometric elements and was used on household linens, blouses, caps, and aprons for the traditional peasant costume. Hardanger is no longer limited to the traditional white on white. Many colors of fabric and fiber are available today.

Blue Round Doily Kit

Hardanger is a counted-thread embroidery that must be worked on even-weave fabric. The most widely used fabric today is an even-weave cotton with 22 threads per inch, known as Hardanger fabric. Pearl cotton is the prefered thread of choice. Two sizes of thread are needed to complete the embroidery. The heavier work including satin stitches, solid matifs and the buttonhole edge, is embroidered with pearl cotton, #5. The finer work, completed after the cutting and removal of some threads of the fabric, uses a single thread of size #8 pearl cotton. Tapestry needles, size 22 and 24, are used because of the blunt points. A good pair of sharp fine tipped scissors are a must for the cutwork.
