The mid 1800's to the early 1900's are considered the golden age of Hungarian peasant folk art, with each region of the country producing distinctive styles of pottery, woodwork, and textiles. Most families produced these beautiful objects for their own homes, often keeping them in the "best room" which was only used on very special occasions. The fame of the colorful Matyo' Art spread beyond its own region to the rest of Hungary and abroad. This was due to both its distinctive style and to the fact that many Matyo' laborers traveled to find work in distant places, thus exposing more people to their creations. The most widely collected objects were painted wooden furniture and embroidered textiles.
The oldest surviving Matyo' embroideries are white or beige on a white backgound. They gradually became more colorful, first employing a red, blue, and yellow color scheme, and eventually evolving into the lively, multicolored compositions of the early part of this century. The women of Mezokovesd were well known for their "szucsos himzes" (tight embroidery), which covers almost the entire base fabric. Besides embroidering pillows and wall hangings for the home, the Matyo' produced beautiful and elaborate folk costumes. Of special note are the aprons and exaggerated long-sleeved shirts that the women embroidered for the men to wear on their wedding day.
Althought the folk costumes have all but disappeared, you don't have to visit a museum to find matyo' textiles. Many women in Mezokovesd carry on the traditions of their mothers and grandmothers, and their work is famous throughout Hungary.
