Lagartera (prounounced La ghar te rah), a colourful peasant embroidery traditionally worked on hand-woven linen, originated in a Spanish village of the same name. Historic documents indicate that La Villa de Lagartera was founded and settled as early as the twelve hundreds. Similar documents establish that the traditions which led to the Lagartera-style of fine embroidered goods dates from the sixteenth century when excellent embroiderers from Lagartera went to the nearby village of Oropesa 'to sew exquisitely embroidered patterns on clothing and linens' for the Dona Juana, Countess of Toedo ... Women from Lagartera, undoubtedly influenced by the Arabic designs and arabesque patterns adopted during centuries of Islamic occupation, wove their patterns into clothes, ... sheets and pillowcases, bedspreads ... and wall hangings ..." A young woman's dowry would contain many pieces of this embroidery, which was characterised by lively colours and geometric motifs suggestive of Moorish influence, so that animal motifs are rarely seen. Lagartera is worked on an even-weave linen using satin stitch, which is often outlined in Spanish stitch (now known as double running stitch, or Holbein stitch). Traditionally, black or brown thread was used to give a strong outline.
