MOUNTMELLICK WHITEWORK |
||||
|
Mountmellick embroidery has an interesting history grounded in the Irish textile cottage industry of the mid-1800's. Were it not for one courageous and determined young woman named Joanna Carter, we might not even know of this highly textured whitework embroidery. In the 1850's, Ireland was in the midst of famine due to a nation-wide failed potato crop, political unheaval, and industrialization from Europe and England destined to virtually eliminate cottage industry businesses. The village of Mountmellick had produced for serveral generations high quality matte-finish cotton yarns and a denim-weight material with a satine finish. Most of the materials were sent to other parts of the UK for dyeing and manufacture to saleable goods: clothing, sweaters, etc. The production of these raw materials was the life-blood of the town. The advent of the three crises put the livelihood of the villagers in jeopardy. Rather than risk seeing her neighbors starve or move to the cities for jobs in the ever-increasing factories, Mrs. Carter developed a hand-crafted home business that allowed the villagers to return to work in the mills and keep their families together. Building on the natural beauty of rural Ireland, she drew the flowers, vines, berries and wildflowers that grew near her home. She taught the women of the village how to trace the drawings onto the satine fabric produced in the mills. Then, drawing on her skills as an embroiderer, she taught the women and girls how to embellish the drawings with a variety of stitches worked with the matte-finish cotton yarn, also produced in the village. For a period of time before the turn of the century, her embroidery, known as Mountmellick even then, was a mandatory subject in the Quaker schools of Ireland. The finished pieces the village women produced were highly prized throughout Europe. It is purported that even the Queen of England had her make a bed coverlet and drapes! Though the original Mountmellick embroideries were quite thick (you can imagine the texture and density of embroidery worked on denim-weight fabric with a number 3 weight pearl cotton!), and worked in the style of crewel work, they displayed exquisite detail in the stitching. |
