ROMANIAN POINT
LACE

The common point of all the publications and articles about Romanian Point Lace is that this beautiful lace, which is a combination of crochet and needle embroidery, was first created in the 18th century in Central Europe. It was inspired by the Reticella lace of the Italian Renaissance period(16th century). The French developed their own embroidery technique inspiring from the Reticella lace. At the end of 18th century, during French Revolution, many noble French families fled into exile and the basic technique of point lace was introduced in the lands where they settled. The lace became very popular in Belgium, Ireland, England in the Victorian era. Later, in 19th century, point lace(point = stitch) spread also to Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Romania. But every country created their own patterns, designs and its own stitches. In Romania, the Romanian Point Lace was first developed in Transylvania, the Western Romania and it is mostly influenced by the French lace. At the same time, Transylvania was under the Austro-Hungarian empire occupation, from mid 18th century until 1918 and, with occupation, some of the lace technique was brought to Romania. Therefore, RPL was mostly known in Transylvania, and from French and Austro-Hungarian combination resulted RPL. In Romania RPL was also called "lacette" from French and during the early 19th century was called "macrame" linking the word "macrame" to the Turkish word "makrama" meaning fringed towel with knots, used for mirrors in Turkey and Bulgaria. Also, Romanian women import the strong thread Makrama from Turkey to make their laces. Romania also produces a similar thread, very twisted but in recent years the quality of it has dropped. Over the years Romanian artisans created their own designs, patterns and more stitches have been added to their lace. Some books have been published in the 1970's. From the time I started learning this lace technique until now the artistry of Romanian women excelled in creating more beautiful and intricate stitches and braids used in developing new designs, patterns, one more beautiful than the other. Romanian women have been using to make this lace and sell it to supplement their families income. During the Communist regime the women were organized in co-operatives to make lace to be sold in Romanian special shops(only for US $) of the beautiful resorts and beaches at the Black Sea, Mamaia, Constantsa where we used to live. After the fall of Communism this beautiful lace is sold in specialty stores in Romanian currency too. Also, Romanian women are free to make and sell their own lace on the free market.
