Rowandean is a new style of stitching from Derbyshire, England. It is a family run business established 20 years ago. The designers are Wilma Shield and her daughter Katrina Witten. In the early days Wilma and Katrina began through teaching Textiles and Art. Their enthusiasm for the subject meant they were always trying out ideas and began with machine embroidery, mostly landscapes. Their style developed with a little bit of the design falling off the edge of the picture to create a picture within a picture.
Gradually people wanted to do their own and so they started designing hand embroidery kits keeping the motif idea and three-dimensional effects. They use spaced dyed threads and fabrics to give magical effects. This gives each embroidery individuality and a unique picture.
There are 100 designs all with different challenges and yet easy instructions to work through the designs step by step. Most of the designs are based on real places. The designs are worked in pastel or watercolours and placed on the fabric using silk screen. Some of the designs are hand painted to give sky effects and paths. These pieces are stitched using various stitches, but the three most used stitches are the stem stitch, satin stitch and French knot.
